As I mentioned in this blog post, after our first trip to San Diego last year, I was certain that we would return and earlier this year, we found two perfect excuses to do just that:
- See Goldfish, a South African electronic duo, live (somehow we had missed them in San Francisco the weekend before!)
- Go sailing and watch the California Gray Whales on their annual migration south towards Mexico
We also hoped to enjoy some sunny, warm weather but we’ve had such a lovely, mild and bright winter in San Francisco that the weather was in fact better in San Francisco that weekend than in San Diego. Thanks to the overcast, cold and windy weather in San Diego, our sailing trip was actually a bit of a disaster – I had imagined spending three hours sitting in the sun under billowing sails, sipping chilled wine and watching whales breach around us but in fact we ended up barely being able to open the sails (opting for motor power to get through the choppy water), wrapped in coats, unable to hold anything besides the side of the boat and wondering if we had seen spray from the waves or the blow of a whale (I’m still not convinced we saw a whale).
Luckily however, the entire trip was not a disaster – we ate huge plates of delicious homemade pasta at Double Standard Kitchenetta, sipped cocktails on the roof of Rustic Root and danced the night away to Goldfish…
